HERMIT CRAB FACTS

Hermit crabs have 10 legs, 6 arms (they are basically arms), and 4 antennae. Of course they all have fancy scientific names.

Hermit crabs are quite social animals. Don't own just one hermit crab; they need buddies. In the wild they often live in large colonies.

Land hermit crabs actually molt or shed their exoskeletons as part of their growing process. They will go off alone and bury themselves in a molting cave. Depending upon the size of the hermit crab, molting can occur between 1 or 2 times a year to many times a year, and may last between 2-3 weeks to 2-3 months. This is a period when land hermit crabs become true hermits.

Some land hermit crab owners have been known to add a couple rolly pollies (pill bugs) to their crabitats. The rolly pollies clean up the hermit crab waste and other scraps around the crabitat. Hey, they are all crustaceans so it can't hurt right?!

Hermit crabs live in old shells made by sea creatures and move into new shells as they grow. Always keep two or three extra shells per crab in case they want to trade in.

There are species of hermit crabs that can grow the size of a coconut and live up to 70 years. Common pet species can live up to 30 years!

Hermit crabs make a unique chirping sound. You might hear them whistling while they work around their habitat, communicating with their buddies, or letting you know if they want to be left alone.

Land hermit crabs love climbing and are experts at climbing up trees or foliage. This provides great opportunites to construct unique homemade structures in your terrarium. (try legos!)
